          Stepan Osipovich Makarov was born on December 27, (January 8, , by the modern calendar) in the city of Nikolayev, into a humble family with many siblings.

          His father was a warrant officer in the navy, his mother the daughter of a retired non-commissioned officer, and his godfather an officer in the navy. This naval lineage seemed to foreshadow Stepan's future as a seafarer.
